Week 10: 2D Fabrication

Yaxuan and I teamed up to complete this assignment. We designed a photo frame. We started by sketching out with Illustrator on the computer. Then we used the laser cutter to output our design, which engraved the pattern and cut the outline. After that, we assembled the stand with the frame. We also made two bicycles, and I was surprised that they stood up without a stand, due to the special three-dimensional structure of cardboard. We placed the frame and bicycles together to create a perspective story image.

  1. Hi Jiaxin,

Your bicycles are so beautiful! It is surprising to know that they can stand alone themselves. I see your work using visual illusion as if the two bicycles are in a photo by managing the spatial distance. I really enjoy your work! Good job!

  2. Hi Jiaxin,

I really like the sense of memories and time reflected from your design. The most interesting part to me is the depth of vision created through the frame. It's a great job!

  3. What a great outcome. I loved how a 2D design was made three-dimensional by the fact that the cardboard could stand as its own and how the bicycles provided depth in the frame. I think the standalone bicycles (without people on or next to them) made for a more meditative, symbolic work.

  4. Hi Jiaxin. I am Lulu. I am impressed by how nice and dedicate the laser cutter cut the little bikes. The outcome is so warm and touching. The elegant decorations on the frame and cute bikes leave audience lot of imagination on how beautiful your friendship is. It is interesting that because of the thickness of cardboard, it can stand up well without any support.

  5. The outcome is great, Jiaxin! The patterns are so sophisticated. The frame sets a scene so that makes the bikes within the frame look life in a film or a reminiscent old photograph. I love that! - Min
